Kandi — a town, a history, an identity
Culture, traditions and local life in the heart of Alibori.
Kandi is more than a stopover: it is a town with character, where tradition and daily life meet.
The origins of Kandi
Kandi is the main town of the Alibori department in northern Benin. Its life has been shaped by several communities, including the Baatonu (Bariba), the Fulani (Peul) and the Dendi, whose languages, skills and traditions still mark the town’s daily life.
Kandi through time
A stop on the roads linking southern Benin to Malanville and Niger, Kandi has become a town of passage, trade and services. Its administrative and commercial role has supported its growth and made it a landmark of the north of the country.
Farming and trade
Alibori is one of Benin’s main farming regions, and cotton plays an essential part. Around the fields, markets and trade, a whole local economy is organised, following the seasons.
Traditions and culture
Traditional clothing, music, dances and ceremonies bring Kandi to life during cultural events and gatherings. These traditions, handed down from generation to generation, are a source of pride for local people.
Nature and environment
The savannah landscape of Alibori changes with the seasons. The department is home to part of W National Park, one of the great natural areas of West Africa, which adds to the region’s richness.
